“Healthtech: the fastest growing export industry in Finland” by CHS Air Logistics/Airlog Group (Finland)

The exports of the Finnish healthtech industry are growing briskly posting in 2014 a new record of EUR 1.8 billion with a growth rate of 8.3 % on the previous year. This means that the branch accounted for some 50 % of the exports of the Finnish high-tech industries last year.

According to Planmeca Oy’s Veli Mäkelä, who is also the chairman of the board of FiHTA (the Finnish Healthtech Association), there has been some annual fluctuation in the exports of the branch, but the long-term growth has been both continuous and markedly stronger than in almost any other industry in Finland. In the period 2009-2014, the annual growth in the healthtech branch was 8.5 %.

Of the healthtech products, the exports of healthcare equipment enjoyed the strongest growth in 2014 at a rate of 10.3 %. The value of these exports was EUR 1.3 billion. The growth rate of diagnostic reagents and equipment was 6.4 %.

The Finnish healthtech industry consists of a few big and global companies together with a number of small and medium-sized companies. Along with the above-mentioned Planmeca, active players include Plandent, Biohit, Merivaara, PaloDEx Group, Fisher Scientific, and Lojer, to name a few. All of these companies are CHS Air Logistics / Airlog Group’s clients.

Around 95 % of the total production of the branch is exported. The biggest export markets are Europe, North America and Asia. The largest export countries for the Finnish healthtech industry are the USA and Germany. Exports to the USA increased by 24 % last year.
