Your PANGEA partner in Australia informs that it is possible in Melbourne that suburban roads could experience an increase in truck traffic as drivers bypass CityLink to avoid a major increase in tolls set for 1st April.
CityLink tolls for heavy vehicles are expected to rise up to 125 per cent. On April 1, the cost of a CityLink day pass will rise from $11.85 to $26.70 and night-time tolls will double from $8.90 to $17.80.
Trucks will be charged three times the daytime rate for cars, and double the night-time rate, when the new charges are introduced on April 1.
A truck leaving the Port of Melbourne on a return day trip to Dandenong will face tolls of close to $60. A significant portion of Victoria’s two million containers per year either going to or from the south-eastern suburbs; this amounts to a substantial impost on the container supply chain.
The increase is being imposed to help pay for the $1.28 billion road widening project , due for completion early next year. The toll increase will add hundreds of thousands of dollars a year to the cost of driving on CityLink for larger freight operators.
